Helicopter Flight Training

The Helicopter Flying Handbook is designed as a technical manual for applicants who are preparing for their private, commercial, or flight instructor pilot certificates with a helicopter class rating. Certificated flight instructors may find this handbook a valuable training aid, since detailed coverage of aerodynamics, flight controls, systems, performance, flight maneuvers, emergencies, and aeronautical decision-making is included. Topics such as weather, navigation, radio navigation and communications, use of flight information publications, and regulations are available in other Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) publications.

  1. Introduction to the Helicopter
  2. Helicopter Aerodynamics
  3. Helicopter Flight Controls
  4. Helicopter Components, Sections, and Systems
  5. Rotorcraft Flight Manual
  6. Helicopter Weight and Balance
  7. Helicopter Performance
  8. Helicopter Ground Procedures and Flight Preparations
  9. Helicopter Basic Flight Maneuvers
  10. Helicopter Advanced Flight Maneuvers
  11. Helicopter Emergencies and Hazards
  12. Helicopter Night Operations
  13. Helicopter Effective Aeronautical Decision-Making

This section conforms to pilot training and certification concepts established by the FAA. There are different ways of teaching, as well as performing, flight procedures and maneuvers, and many variations in the explanations of aerodynamic theories and principles. This handbook adopts a selective method and concept to flying helicopters. The discussion and explanations reflect the most commonly used practices and principles.

This section is based on the FAA Helicopter Flying Handbook FAA-H-8083-21B 2019.

Helicopter Instructor’s Handbook

The Helicopter Instructor’s Handbook is designed as a technical manual for applicants who are preparing for their flight instructor pilot certificate with a helicopter class rating. This handbook contains detailed coverage of aerodynamics, flight controls, systems, performance, flight maneuvers, emergencies, and aeronautical decision-making. Topics such as weather, navigation, radio navigation and communications, use of flight information publications, and regulations are available in other Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) publications.

  1. Introduction to Helicopter Flight Training
  2. Introduction to the Helicopter (Instructor)
  3. Helicopter Aerodynamics (Instructor)
  4. Helicopter Flight Controls (Instructor)
  5. Helicopter Components, Sections, and Systems (Instructor)
  6. Rotorcraft Flight Manual (Instructor)
  7. Helicopter Weight and Balance (Instructor)
  8. Helicopter Performance (Instructor)
  9. Helicopter Preflight and Postflight Procedures
  10. Helicopter Basic Flight Maneuvers (Instructor)
  11. Helicopter Advanced Flight Maneuvers (Instructor)
  12. Helicopter Emergencies and Hazards (Instructor)
  13. Helicopter Night Operations (Instructor)
  14. Practical Examination and Preparation for Flight Review
  15. Single-Pilot Resource Management, Aeronautical Decision-Making, and Risk Management

This handbook conforms to flight instructor pilot training and certification concepts established by the FAA. There are different ways of teaching, as well as performing flight procedures and maneuvers, and many variations in the explanations of aerodynamic theories and principles. Occasionally the word “must” or similar language is used where the desired action is deemed critical. The use of such language is not intended to add to, interpret, or relieve a duty imposed by Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR).
